The Divergent Trilogy

Updated: Oct 1, 2019

The Divergent trilogy, written by Veronica Roth, is a young adult science fiction adventure. The series consists of Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant. All three books are on the number one list of the New York’s Best Selling books. The setting is in Chicago, Illinois in the far future. The main characters are Tris and Four.

This series will help people get lost from the outside world. It shows a society of many different types of people who actually aren’t much different from us. It reveals love, sacrifices, and destruction that had to happen for life to continue until it gets out of control. Who is truly causing the destruction? Is it the divergents everyone fears, or is there something bigger that is out to get them?

“One choice decides your friends. One choice defines your beliefs. One choice determines your loyalties-forever. One choice can transform you.”

In the first book, Divergent, the main character, 16-year-old Tris (short for Beatrice) along with her soon to be friends, must choose which of the five factions to spend the rest of their lives with. Their choices send them on an adventure together through things way worse than society is today.

“A choice becomes a sacrifice. A sacrifice becomes a loss. A loss becomes a burden. A burden becomes a battle. One choice can destroy you.”

In the second book, Insurgent, Tris, chooses to sacrifice herself for the greater good. Tris, her friends, and their recruit trainer, Four (whose real name is Tobias) battle against the corrupt government.

“One choice can transform you. One choice can destroy you. One choice will define you.”

In the final book, Allegiant, someone has to make the ultimate sacrifice to save the world from

the corrupt government and their genetic testing.

I give the series a 4.5* rating instead of a 5*—only because of the way it ends. It is a longer series that can take some time for people who are busy with work or even school to finish reading. It took me 14 days of steady reading during my free time to finish all three books. If you liked the Hunger Game series, I believe you would also like the Divergent trilogy. I personally recommend reading this series not only to get lost in something so simple but to anyone who loves utopian and dystopian fiction.
