The Awakening and The Reckoning

The Darkest Powers series written by Kelley Armstrong. It’s a young adult series and is on the New York Times Best Selling list. The books in the series are The Summoning, The Awakening, and The Reckoning. The Awakening and The Reckoning are the last two books of the Darkest Powers series. They have a constant change of setting, but are always in the state of New York. The main characters are Chole Sanders, Derek Souza, Simon Bae, Tori Enright, and Liz Delaney.

The Awakening is the type of book that gets the readers attention, then looses it shortly after. This book wasn’t like the other. It struggles to captivate you and doesn’t make you want to know more. It took me some time to actually get through the book. It continues the story of “troublesome” teens—teens with powers that have been tampered with. Simon and Derek are still on the run. Tori has been moved to a new location along with Rae and Chloe after their escape. Will they escape? If so, where will they go and what challenges await them? Do they ever find the boys?

“‘So what was that? A zombie?’ Liz tried to sound calm, but her voice crackled. ‘Something like that.’ ‘And you—you can resurrect the dead?’ I stared at the crushed bat and murmured, ‘I wouldn’t call it resurrection.’ ‘What about people? Can you’—she swallowed—’do that?’ I nodded. ‘So that’s what Tori’s mom meant. You raised zombies at the Lyle House.’ ‘Accidentally.’”

The Reckoning is the final book in the series. This book took a very short time to read. I would pick it up and block out my surroundings just to be able to read something as exciting as this. Being met with kidnapping, death, running away, untrustworthy people, getting captured again, and escaping? Maybe life is against them. Maybe it is helping friendships shape and others get closer. Do they get their happy ending they deserve?

“In the end, there is always a reckoning. Chloe Sander’s life is not what you would call normal. First of all, she can’t figure out how she feels about a certain antisocial werewolf or his charming brother—who just happens to be a sorcerer. Then there’s the fact that she is running for her life from an evil corporation that’s trying to kill her and her supernatural friends. And finally, she’s a genetically altered necromancer who can raise the dead, rotting corpse and all, without even trying. Not normal. But Chloe has and plan… And the end is very near.”

I give the second book in the series is a 3☆ out of 5☆. It was a decent book, but wasn’t a very interesting book. It took me at least three weeks to get through it because I didn’t have that much interest in it. The third book of the series, however, gets a 6☆ out of 5☆. It kept my attention and had a really good ending. It’s still not as good as the first book of the series, but it definitely comes close. I recommend reading the series and going through the adventure with the “troubled” teens.
